to the outcome of the special session on children.
A World Fit for
Children + 5
On December 12, 2007, the Network for Sustained Elimination of Iodine
Deficiency (Iodine Network) held a side event at the Commemorative
high-level plenary meeting devoted to the follow-up to the outcome
of the special session on children: A World Fit for Children + 5,
at the United Nations in New York. Hosted by ICCIDD (International
Council for the Control of Iodine Deficiency), the side event, A
Triumph in the Making: The Untold Story of Preventing Iodine Deficiency
and the Need to Complete the Promise, was a success with the
conference room filled to capacity. Statements were made by country
representatives from Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia,
Pakistan, and The Philippines. Other countries were also present
including Russia and Niger.
Dr. Gerard Burrow (Chair of ICCIDD) was the master of ceremony and
speakers included Alan Court (Chair of Iodine Network) and Dick Hanneman
(President of Salt Institute). Statements were also made by Marc van
Ameringen (Executive Director of GAIN) and Dr. Ernest Loevinsohn of
CIDA. Bob Moore, the former president of Kiwanis International, and
Micronutrient Initiative board member, also spoke. The event was closed
by special guest, Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF, Kul Gautam.
Proceedings of the event were covered by 24 media sites in 11 countries
and included such esteemed publications as the International Herald
Tribune, Voice of America and the Associated Press.
