Current Iodine Deficiency Disorder Situation
Population
Population: 1.4 million
Population growth rate: 3.1%
Population < 15 years: 45.2%
Birth rate: 41.8 per 1000
Life expectancy at birth: 53.6 years
Infant mortality: 77.8 per 1000
Prevalence of Goiter/ UIE
Median urinary iodine: 32 mcg/L. No national data, however, small surveys in Northeast found IDD with an estimated TGR of 20. Neighboring Senegal known to have IDD. In 1993, a limited goiter prevalence survey done in poor elementary schools of the western, eastern, and central regions (5-12 year olds) found very high prevalence throughout the country. Visible goiter rate was 8.9-20.8%. while TGR prevalences ranged from 70-93%. (IDD Newsletter 11/95).
A total of 2,227 urine samples collected from four regions in 1994 had a median concentration of 32 mcg/L, indicating moderate IDD. (IDD Newsletter 11/95).
Iodized salt Coverage
Household iodized salt use: 8%
Salt Situation Analysis Production
90% of the salt comes from Senegal . A small quantity comes from Sierra Leone , Great Britain, Belgium and Germany .
Local production occurs in three main sites: Bintang, Albreda, and Darsilameh. Some of the producers are loosely organized, but much of the salt is prepared by solar evaporation or boiling and sold in markets without any organization. Promotional tours have been arranged by the National Nutrition Committee to discuss the organization of small-scale producers into cooperatives. (IDD Newsletter 11/95).
Consumption
- Estimated daily per capita salt consumption: no data
- Estimated % of all salt consumed by people which is adequately iodized (household level): 8%
Iodine Procurement and Utilization
No data
Universal Salt Iodization Program
Information, Education, Communication (IEC) Activities
Legislation
- Legislation: Drafted, will mandate iodization but no legislation yet. Legislation for Animals: no data
- Year Enacted: n/a
Program Monitoring and Evaluation
A national multisectoral committee on nutrition has been created at the Ministry of Health is responsible. No active efforts.
Other Interventions
No data
Key Lessons Learned
Challenges and Constraints
Major problem is that virtually all salt comes from Senegal and is uniodized, despite Senegal 's salt for itself is iodized.
