Current Iodine Deficiency Disorder Situation

Population

Population:  3.2 million
Population growth rate:  1.9%
Population < 15 years:
Birth rate:  47/1000
Life expectancy at birth:   51.4 years
Infant mortality:  132/1000

Prevalence of Goiter/ UIE

Median urinary iodine: 321 mcg/L. A 1985 survey in Nimba province observed a goiter prevalence of 13.9%.

A 1999 survey of 2,060 children, 6-11 years old, in 210 primary schools, 10 children per school, covering seven areas selected for the suspected risk of IDD.  The median urinary iodine for the seven areas was 321 mcg/L.

Probably not iodine deficient, but need updated data.

Iodized salt C overage

Household iodized salt use: 84%

Salt Situation Analysis

Production

No data on salt production. Most salt is imported from Guinea and C ote d'Ivoire , by land, also Ghana and Senegal ; already iodized before import.

Consumption

  • Estimated daily per capita salt consumption: no data
  • Estimated % of all salt consumed by people which is adequately iodized (household level):   84%

Iodine Procurement and Utilization

KIO3, no data on ppm.

Universal Salt Iodization Program

Information, Education, Communication (IEC) Activities

Legislation

  • Legislation: No
  • Legislation for Animals: No
  • Year Enacted: N/A

Program Monitoring and Evaluation

Goiter, urinary iodine, and salt iodine have been occasionally assessed.  No regular program.

Other Interventions
