Current Iodine Deficiency Disorder Situation
Population
Population: 2.8 million
Population growth rate: 2.9%
Population < 15 years: 46.1%
Birth rate: 42.5 per 1000
Life expectancy at birth: 51.5 years
Infant mortality: 75.2 per 1000
Prevalence of Goiter/ UIE
Median urinary iodine: 70% below 1000 mcg/L. National survey 1996 showed TGR 30.9%, VGR 6.1%. An IDD prevalence survey conducted by UNI C EF/WHO shows that IDD is a serious public health problem in Mauritania, especially in the south.
Same national survey showed urinary iodine 70% below 100 mcg/L, 42% below 50 mcg/L.
Urinary thiocyanate reported high, particularly in south. Need updated information
Iodized salt C overage
Household iodized salt use: 3%
Salt Situation Analysis Production
Salt has historically played an important role in the economy of Mauritania and was in the past traded for gold. National consumption is estimated at 12,000 tons and is largely covered by domestic production. A small quantity of salt is imported from France , Spain and Senegal . Salt production is dominated by two large producers which produce 'gem salt' retailed in big blocks of salt of about 10 kgs. There are many small producers who are located along the shore line. In light of the situation analysis, four salt producing sites have been selected for which iodization equipment and supplies have been procured. The Government planned legislation late in 1996 which would make the iodization of all edible salt compulsory. Problem is that salt easily available in central mountain areas. Probably more than 50% use rock salt, but more use of iodized salt in south. One plant produces iodized salt, but currently no regulation or incentive.
