Current Iodine Deficiency Disorder Situation

Population

Population:   1.1 million
Population growth rate:   1.83%
Population < 15 years:   45.5%
Birth rate:   40.1 per 1000
Life expectancy at birth:   38.6 years
Infant mortality:   109.2 per 1000

Prevalence of Goiter/ UIE

Median urinary iodine: 179mcg/L .

No national data - It appears there are some severe IDD areas including Ekufikeni and Ensigweni (Hhohho), Ngwempisana, Mahlangatja and Mgazini (Manzinii), Our Lady of Sorrows and Mhlosheni (Shiselweni) and Lomahasha (Lumbombo). Survey of schools in 4 areas, three known to be endemic, found TGR 6-38% in 1993.

Median UI reported as 179 mcg/L (IDD NL 16(2):27, 2000); further details not known.

Iodized salt Coverage

Household iodized salt use: 76% (2000). The mandatory iodization of salt in South Africa has probably affected Swaziland .

Salt Situation Analysis

Production

All salt is imported from the Republic of South Africa . There is no local production, refining or packaging of salt.

Consumption

  • Estimated daily per capita salt consumption: no data
  • Estimated % of all salt consumed by people which is adequately iodized (household level):   76% (2000); 26% (UNI C EF, 1995)

Iodine Procurement and Utilization

KIO3 at 30 ppm.

Universal Salt Iodization Program

Information, Education, Communication (IEC) Activities

An IDD program was developed in 1994, with goals of USI by 1995 and IDD elimination by 2000. A micronutrient multisectoral committee was established. Extensive IE C has taken place.

Legislation

  • Legislation: yes
  • Legislation for Animals: no
  • Year Enacted: no data

Program Monitoring and Evaluation

National Nutrition C ouncil is responsible. Status of activities not known.

Other Interventions

Some limited iodized oil capsule distribution in endemic area.
