Population
Population: 9.7 million
Population growth rate 1.15%:
Population < 15 years: 28.7%
Birth rate: 17.1 per 1000
Life expectancy at birth: 73.9 years
Infant mortality: 29.0 per 1000
Prevalence of Goiter/ UIE
Median urinary iodine: no recent data. A 1995 regional survey by neonatal TSH and UI in pregnant woman showed iodine deficiency, details not known.
A 1993 national survey on 8-10 year olds was planned. A 1981 National prevalence survey conducted by the Government identified the mountain areas, especially the north-west region as having the highest goiter prevalence with a TGR of 9.5%. Low overall IDD prevalence in other regions of the country. Urinary iodine was 69 mcg/L in Tunis and 39 mcg/L in the northwest.
C urrent impression that iodine sufficient, but needs data, especially urinary iodine levels.
Iodized salt C overage
Household iodized salt use: 97% (2000)
Salt Situation Analysis Production
No data on import. Produces own salt, by solar evaporation.
Consumption
- Estimated daily per capita salt consumption: 4 kg per year
- Estimated % of all salt consumed by people which is adequately iodized (household level): 97%
Iodine Procurement and Utilization
