U.N. Special Session on Children, May 8th, 2002. "During the first phase of China's IDD elimination effort, from 1994 to 2000, we have basically reached the intermediate goal of IDD elimination. Crucial factors for our progress are: high level commitments of senior leaders, close collaboration between salt industry and related departments, and the strong support from international organizations... IDD elimination is not only a serious health issue; it is also a social and economic issue. IDD elimination can also help break the vicious cycle of poverty by enabling all children, especially those in diadvantaged areas, to reach their intellectual potential for economic and social development. Thus, for the benefit of the prosperity and strength of China, the health development of our children, China Salt Industry will, as always, do our best."
