U.N. Special Session on Children, May 8th, 2002. "I am proud to be here among the governments, industry leaders, and other distinguished speakers representing the thousands of Kiwanians around the world who have contributed so much to the global efforts towards ending iodine deficiency. I'm especially proud because we are here to represent another group that is crucial to the success of salt iodization - civil society, those of us who not only consume iodized salt, spread the word about iodine deficiency, raise funds, and lobby governments to ensure that this problem goes away and stays away... But we know the job is not yet done. We must be vigilant and protect that investment that all of us have made. We must continue to work to sustain the gains - until every person consumes iodized salt so that no child is ever born again with a 'slow start' in life. Kiwanis is committed to doing its part to this end. We pledge to continue working together with you and for the children. The elimination of iodine deficiency is a step in showing our love for children and giving them that chance."
